After almost 10 years of scanning slides, I have found that those who send slides of artwork for scanning are often the most difficult to customers to please. This is why I've created this page.

It is expected that tweaking of the scans with image editing software will be required by the customer to make the scans look as much like the original art as possible.

Color correction on family snap-shots or landscapes is easy. With scans of slides showing artwork, it can be tricky.

Expecting slide scans of artwork to match the exact colors and contrast of the original art is not a realistic expectation. There are several reasons for this.

Lighting:

When artwork is copied by photographing it with slide film, it is often done indoors under fluorescent or incandescent light. Most slide film types are balanced for the color of daylight or sunshine.

Fluorescent lights will often leave a green cast and incandescent lights will leave a yellow or orange cast.

I attempt to get the white balance of the scans to the best possible condition. My ability to due this can be hindered by several things. If there is nothing pure white in the film image, a reference point, it is difficult to get accurate white balance.

When slides depict copies of old, faded images, some customer might want the scans to retain the old faded look. Color correction wil often remove the old, faded look.

Slides made by copying old black and white prints or newspaper photos will often show a strong color cast, either from the age of the original or from the lighting when the copy was made or both.

If your slides are copies of old looking photos, please let me know if you do NOT want the color of those scans returned to pure black and white. In other words, if your slide are copies of images with a sepia tone or faded yellow newsprint for example, they will be corrected to B&W unless you indicate not to do so. Make a note of this on the order form.

Slide Scan Contrast:

Original artwork has it's own unique brightness and contras. That will vary depending upon how it is lit.

Its not possible for me to correct slide scans of artwork to make them look just like the art.

Cropping:

I recommend to customers with slides of artwork to let me include a bit of the mount in the scan. This ensures that all of the visible area of the film is captured in the scan. I very often find that the slide mount covers portions of the artwork, or that the artwork is very close to the edge of the opening in the mount. Crop margins are set at the beginning of a batch of scans and remain the same for each scan. To ensure none of the mount is included, when that is requested, I must set the crop margins slightly in from the opening in the mount. This risks clipping off some of the artwork. Custom cropping is not included in my regular price.

Straight and Level:

If your artwork is not level in the slide image, the scan might not show the artwork level. Custom rotation is not included in the standard pricing.

Again, it is expected that tweaking of the scans with image editing software will be required by the customer to make the scans look as much like the original art as possible.
